This is a book about families. Family of origin, who may let you down. Chosen family, who may lift you up. And how one navigates through it all to have the family they crave. When Tait gets a photography job working on a ranch for several different projects (this part was a little unclear to me), she blindly accepts, only to discover the ranch in question is that of her estranged father and his family. Unable to get out of it, she chooses to face the situation head-on and complete the job(s?). Through this experience she finds answers she no longer thought she needed about herself and what caused her parents to split 20 some years prior.
There is a scene in this book where they are replanting plants from pots and they cut through the roots to allow them to grow out instead of bound up around the plant. This is how this book felt to me. People stuck in the story of their lives, caught in grief and different flavors of betrayal, until something cuts through all that constrains them and allows them to fully be present in their lives. Tarah Dewitt’s work continues to impress me with the fine balance between levity and depth. Her characters are nuanced with engaging stories that bring me back time and time again.
