Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

adventurous funny lighthearted medium-paced

3.0

I read this book after watching the Studio Ghibli movie of the same name and this is one of the rare times when I preferred the film to the book. I think it’s also because I listened to the audiobook instead of reading it physically. Listening is never the best way I read. I’m a very distracted listener at the best of times and I often lose track of important plot points and conversations, and nuances of narration and characterisations. I do best with audiobooks when they’re ones I’ve already read physically, so I don’t have to pay too much attention.

What has stayed with me though is Wynne Jones, fantastical premise, plot and imagery, which is another reason I loved the movie! The animation in it is par excellence! Jones’ characters are over-the-top drama queens for the most part, whether it’s Howl, Sophie, Calcifer, the Witch, the Scarecrow and Michael among others. My favourite was Calcifer - a very sly yet delightful fire demon, bound to Howl. I just think the movie did a fabulous job of bringing all of Jones’ characters to life on screen 😊

This is basically a found family, coming of age story that explores themes of love, friendship, loyalty, jealousy, courage and sacrifice through relationship dynamics between its characters. The plot is intricate and well planned, the prose is pithy, the pacing is good and all in all, this a fun, racy, adventure with large dollops of whimsy and magic! I’m always happy to discover a great new to me author. I will eventually read more in this series from Wynne Jones.
