House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

i have such conflicting feelings for this book

the beginning was hard to get through just because of how much new information and world building was being introduced. although i knew that going into this book, so i was prepared. was not prepared for the main storyline.
i do not like murder mysteries. i think it’s boring as fuck to read through the mc’s checking out alibis, talking to witnesses and potential suspects, finding evidence, ITS ALL BORING! plus they reiterate the SAME thing over and over. the things that you can infer, they have to state it. so for majority of the book, i was bored as shit.
i was not into the banter between bryce and hunt. i hate to say it, but some scenes were VERY cringy to read. the whole hat scene where she asks him “what’s up with the hat?”
“it’s a hat?”
“doesn’t fit with the brooding masculine alpha hole persona you got going on”
then he flips its around and makes her wear the hat. ARE WE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL???
although when they got vulnerable with each other, especially after hunt came back from an order from micah and bryce was in the shower with him, washing him, it was very nice to read and that’s when i started to like them together.
killing off the bestfriend and potential love interest in the beginning though was SICK, sjm

the ending is what reeled me back in. from bryce finding hunt on the boat doing the drug deal, to the VERY end, it got me hooked. the ending was the absolute best part. i couldn’t believe that we had found out who killed danika (incorrectly), hunt was being locked up and traded back to sandriel, and bryce just had to live with that fact and there was still SO much of the book left??? but it just got so good!! it was action packed, it had romance, it had familial love, it have vegenance, it had plot twists, it had everything!! if only the whole book was like that, i would’ve given it 4 stars.
i broke down crying when danika and bryce were saying “light it up!” such a good scene. then bryce was able to make the drop with danika, even if she wasn’t alive and i love that. also loved the scene where hunt was trying to restart bryce’s heart, and he said “i heard what you said while i was dying, you fucking coward. come back and say it to me face” ugh love that so much
in the end, i had to give this book 2 stars because i was bored for the majority of it. the last 100-200 pages were amazing, but the whole book is not like that at all.
