Broken Mirrors by Marie McWilliams
5.0
Stylistically, Broken Mirrors is very much out of my wheelhouse. It's more of a psychological thriller with a dark, noir vibe rather than horror. Discovering and reading this kind of book is part of why I'm so glad to be on Bookstagram. It's allowed me to find new authors and branch out into other genres.
Synopsis - our protagonist Marie has moved from Belfast to London looking for a fresh start and to escape a toxic family environment. Feeling lost, she nevertheless meets and falls in love with Malcolm Carter, who unbeknownst to Marie is an organized crime boss. Malcolm inevitably can't keep his personal and professional lives separate, and Marie ends up paying a huge price for this.
I love this book for a lot of reasons. It's deliberately paced and difficult to put down. I felt attached to the characters, and invested in what happens to them. And my goodness the ending! It genuinely surprised me while making perfect sense.
I would also say (and I mean this as a huge compliment), that I'd love to see this turned into a 10 episode miniseries on Netflix or something. Very dark, and modern noir. Everything about this book lends it to that kind of treatment. And it's the type of show you'd want to binge watch on top of it.
All that said, I have to give this 5 stars, and I can't wait to see what McWilliams does next!
