What an absolute banger of a novel for all the religious trauma girlies. I was hesitant to pick this up, because quite frankly, I’m tired of reading pandemic novels, no matter how little they resemble the pandemic we recently lived through, but this subverted all of my expectations. Instead of another hopeless apocalyptic story, I found instead an incredible cast of characters that I became immediately attached to. American Rapture was gross, horrifying, and yet somehow still beautiful and hopeful. Sophie summed up exactly what it feels like to be a teenage girl with severely limited autonomy. I also found Maro’s accidental acquisition of a stray dog and stray teenager to be deeply relatable. This was so fantastic and I look forward to reading much more from CJ Leede.
