I honestly don’t even know where to start with this book because it just completely fell apart for me. Everything I tolerated in Deceit just compounded into an even bigger issue in Descent, to the point that I found myself skimming just to get through it without rolling my eyes every five minutes.
𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
This book picks up exactly where book one left off, Skyla and Asher are officially married, and he is an absolute arsehole again after the horrific ordeal at the "wedding" ceremony. Skyla is now unable to determine if he was always a dick or if was he playing the part to protect her from his father? Either way she is left devastated, humiliated and pissed that he treated her like a whore in front of the entire Brethren… but that’s not going to stop her from carrying on with her relationships with the other men in her life. Now that she and Asher are technically married, she’s forced to move into a house with him, meaning they have to navigate whatever twisted version of a relationship they have while also dealing with the fact that she comes with three boyfriends.
𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
The only aspect that I enjoyed in this book was Asher and Liam’s bi-awakening and how their relationship strengthened. like when the FMC's boyfriends also become boyfriends... There were moments where you could cut the tension between them with a knife and their bond felt like it had some emotional depth… unlike the majority of the book.
This entire book is just sex, THAT IS ALL IT HAS GOING FOR IT. There are also so many contradictions that make zero sense. Like, what the hell is the actual role of women in this society? Because from what I understand, most women in the Brethren die, especially if you look at the family tree. Yet, Skyla’s aunt somehow knows everything and is still alive. Liam’s mother is alive, (even though the elder’s wives are always killed). Vincent’s mother was "apparently" an exterminator... when women aren’t supposed to have any power in this world?
And I know people could say this is a "Character-driven" Story... but where is the actual character development? If you strip out the sex scenes (it would leave you with maybe 10 pages of the actual plot). And don't get me started on how surface-level and bland Skyla feels. I feel like I hardly even know her as a character (this is basically all I know):
- She likes sex. A lot.
- She eats spaghetti bolognese.
- She drinks matcha, not coffee.
- She orders salad and chicken for lunch.
- She used to swim, but she's already sleeping with Vincent and Ronan so this part of her personality clearly it’s not that important cause she hardly ever does it.
- OH... and she HAS A MAGIC VAGINA which means every single man that looks her way wants to sleep with her. Every. Single. One.
Listen, I love a good smutty book, but when every chapter is just another sex scene with another guy (or multiple guys at once), it stops being sexy and starts feeling repetitive. At a certain point, I found myself skimming through the scenes because they weren’t adding anything to the story. They weren’t developing relationships or deepening emotional connections, they were just there to pad the page count.
𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▶ Enemies to Lovers, Fiancé’s Best Friend, Fiancé’s Uncle, Fiancé’s Rival?
▶ Forbidden Romance
▶ Age Gap
▶ Bully Romance
▶ Reverse Harem (MFMMM but kinda MMFMM?)
▶ Touch Her You Die
▶ TeacherXStudent
▶ Virgin FMC
▶ Secret Society
▶ Arranged Marriage
𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨 and 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙨::
▷ Bi Awakening
▷ "Look at me"
▷ Pierced MMC
▷ Nicknames
▷ Tending to Injuries
▷ Potato Sack Over His Shoulder
▷ "Good Girl"
▷ Biting/Spitting
▷ Car Sex
▷ Knife Play
I wanted to like this book. I really did. But the more I read, the more frustrated I got. The lack of plot and substance just did nothing for me. I wanted more than just sex...
I am DNFing this series - I opened page one of book 3 to see who the stalker was and once I knew I don't feel like I can get anything else from this book...
