The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

slow-paced

1.75

This was my 45th book finished in 2025.

Oh how I found this story so boring! I was expecting horror, but was severely disappointed. The author tells us (near the end) that things are scary, instead of writing them in a scary way. I don't feel scared if you're not giving me a reason to be scared.

Having enjoyed the film as a teenager, I was disappointed to find it bearing no relations to the source. They did a job job to craft a story out of it!

Writing this from a historian's POV was a big mistake. It was so weird to not have any dialogue, and it got so boring just being told things instead of shown them.

The author gave so much description to food, and birds, and what people were wearing - but nothing that I actually cared about! God it was so dull. I really didn't like the way the author wrote.

There was also strange, unnecessary sections of racism and sexism.

The ending was also really underwhelming, and it went in for too long.

Having after found out it was written in 1820, just two years after Frankenstein, I'm a bit more forgiving. Horror was in its infancy, and we've come to expect more from it. Still didn't make me enjoy it though. It felt so long.
