Talking Back to Purity Culture: Rediscovering Faithful Christian Sexuality by Rachel Joy Welcher
5.0
This is a truly excellent critique of Purity Culture within the church without be a rage against the Bible, theology, or specific groups and people. Welcher points out the more problematic issues of purity culture, beginning with solidly laying the foundation of how it made an idol of both marriage and sex. From there, she goes into looking at the groups of people purity culture both hurt and left out of narratives due to the way it was framed. In each of these critiques, she discusses ways the church can heal from that and better work as a community of believers. She ends with some practical (and hard) ways forward. This book will push a lot of people out of their comfort zone. Despite always being one of the people side eyeing purity culture (or Christian pop culture trends in general), I was deeply surprised as I read this of how much of the teaching of this movement I had actually internalized. It's definitely a book I feel all Christian church leaders and parents should read, whether you were ever into the trend or not. Welcher has a lot of good things to say about how the church continues to not handle discussions of biblical sexual ethics well.
