5.0
This is Bryan Stevenson’s book on the development of the Equal Justice Initiative. During his Harvard Law School days, Stevenson made a trip down to the Deep South and was asked to visit a man on Death Row to tell him he would not be executed “soon.” This led Stevenson to learn more about the men and women who many times through poverty, racism, abuse and mental illness are unjustly convicted of serious crimes that land them on Death Row. In addition to dedicating his career to helping inmates get off of Death Row, he also focuses on children who are tried as adults and sentences to adult prison. 13,14, 15 year olds obviously are not in a position to fight the adult justice system and experience absolutely horrific treatment once behind bars. This book is hard to read, but Stevenson and team are doing incredible work to bring Just Mercy to so many. Highly recommend reading and now I want to watch the movie. I’ve also read The Sun Does Shine about Anthony Ray Hinton’s case whom Stevenson was able to help as well, and that is a 5 star as well.
