I think the statement "This is an Imaginary Story. Aren't They All?" in the prologue captured perfectly the essence of Superman before the Crisis in the 80's. Alan Moore brought his unique vision while totally respecting and honoring what came before, wrapped it up and sealed it with a kiss. This is nigh perfect comic storytelling.
