I love Jesmyn Ward, but this was by far my least favorite novel written by her.  I just feel like the story has been told better (in more detail) by other authors.  The language used was also very modern in some sections, and I couldn’t get as immersed in the story as a result.  The last chapter, however, redeems the hard slog.
