Reminiscing: Memories of Old Nassau by Valeria Moseley Moss
informative
reflective
medium-paced
5.0
Reminiscing evokes memories that I do not have; it brings old town Nassau to life before it became the bustling city it is today. Moss takes you through downtown Nassau and the slow city life that she lived. Paired with photos from various archives, it brings vivid pictures of old Nassau to life in my mind. I enjoyed Moss' old stories and hearing about things my grandparents and great-grandparents would have possibly experienced.
I will admit I was a tad bitter as I started reading. Valeria Moseley Moss comes from an elite white family who lived in the center of town life, experiencing things my family would never have been able to experience being black and monetarily impoverished. The way Moss flippantly references somethings in her stories caused me to scoff or roll my eyes. While my grandparents are alive for me to ask questions about history, it does sadden me that I did not ever really know my great-grandparents (both great grandmothers died when I was young) or ask questions about their experiences during the turbulent periods of time.
