Circe by Madeline Miller

5.0

I loved it! I feel that overall it's closer to 4.5 stars; however, it deserves 5 stars even just for the unexpected, and very well done, awesome ending -- I was sure the ending was going the exact opposite way than it went. I LOVE Odyssey and Iliad and Greek mythology, but I avoid modern retellings. This book was so worth reading that it might have changed my mind about avoiding modern retellings, and from now on I will be giving them a chance.

PS. That been said, I'm not sure how I would have felt about the book if I didn't have knowledge of the Odyssey and the mythological events and characters; as it is, seen them coming to life again from the point of view of Circe, the goddess, witch of Aiaia, it was a delight to me.
There are a couple noticeable inaccuracies that stray from the version of Homer's Odyssey for the specific event they describe; however, that might have been intentional rather than a mistake, and it didn't take away from the story at all as I didn't expect an exact copy of the original.
