I'm normally quite picky about my fantasy stories, but there's something about this one that really captured my attention. It tells the story of Kvothe and the early years of his life. It is a simple summary, but it truly is an epic story.
The world building is expansive. His magic system is unique, very different from what you normally encounter in other fantasy books. Legends, myths, even their coin system are in depth and explored. And some of the lore leaves you wanting more as you read on.
The way he writes...it's hard to describe. It's beautiful and descriptive and poetic. A favorite line that I made sure to highlight was this:
"It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story."
Patrick Rothfuss' way of writing is unique and enjoyable. He describes simple things like music in such a deep way. I know I'm doing a terrible job at describing why it's good, but I find it hard to do so. It's really worth experiencing for yourself.
As someone whose primarily into fantasy with dragons and other beasties, this one was a very pleasant surprise. If you like fantasy, I recommend giving this one a try. Also #f***Ambrose
