Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman
3.0
Everybody is talking about the foot fetish or the age gap or Elio f-cking a peach but is NOBODY going to talk about that scene in Rome where they have sex in the hotel bathroom, shit in front of each other on the toilet, and then look at each other’s excrement?????? Like Oliver was deadass rubbing Elio’s belly while Elio was on the toilet. Is nobody on God’s green Earth going to bring that up. Am I actually insane. Why tf have I seen NO ONE else mention that.
Overall most of the story was pretty boring. The beginning was interesting but then it started to slog, especially during the Rome chapters. The prose and setting were pretty though.
However the one big redeeming factor of this book is the last few chapters where Elio and Oliver are older and reunite. Literally the best parts of the book. If the whole book was of that same quality, I would have easily bumped the rating up higher. It felt emotional and the writing was so heartfelt. Maybe that’s because I find romance between older characters more engaging than teenage lust.
