Mouse Guard: The Black Axe by David Petersen

4.0

Wonderful artwork - after the last 2 collected 'Mouse Guard' volumes which contained art by various artists (the anthology series 'Legends of the Guard'), it is satisfying to get more of David Peterson's original style for the series. The archaic script is a bit tough to read at times, but is beautiful.
I was a little disappointed in the storyline, however. I guess I was expecting more of Celanawe's early exploits as the Black Axe, and not just the beginning origin story. I also was anticipating that the current-time events about a new, large threat to the mouse territories (which the territories were attempting to appease) from the opening of the volume would be revisited at the end, but maybe this is a storyline to be addressed in future issues.
If you have not read the earlier Mouse Guard volumes, this is not the one to start with, but if you are already a fan, it remains a must-have volume on your bookshelf.
