Gone Wolf by Amber McBride
slow-paced
2.5
This was just an okay read for me even though I LOVED her previous works. I think the premise was interesting and the end half had a nice nod to her previous works (character names mentioned and of course the recurring theme of mental health). But it was so slow that I had to force myself to finish it. I stopped to take a break from reading it multiple times. I think if you didn't know racial history, this would be a good place to start, but I skipped a lot of the notes as it was already information that I know/speak about/continue to interact with on social media. I also wasnt a big fan of the portrayal that the pandemic is essentially over/not as serious anymore because of vaccines. COVID is still a very serious and highly infectious disease and people still need to be taking the proper precautions (MASK UP and have good air filtration/ventilation). Heavy topics are discussed so if you are getting this for a younger audience (since it is middle grade) be aware of all content/trigger warnings.
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Child abuse, Child death, Confinement, Death, Hate crime, Mental illness, Panic attacks/disorders, Racism, Slavery, Violence, Xenophobia, Blood, Police brutality, Medical content, Grief, Death of parent, Murder, Injury/Injury detail, Classism, and Pandemic/Epidemic
