The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates
5.0
What a tour de force. This book is kind of hard to get into at first, but if you stick with it, you’ll find yourself immersed in a stunning narrative about a slave in Virginia who becomes an agent of the Underground Railroad and who uses the magical powers of his ancestors’ memory to do some of his work. The writing is gorgeous, the characters are fully formed and powerful, the insights about slavery are amazing and don’t shy away from the grotesque realities, and overall it’s an inspired take on the bravery of the abolitionist movement, and those who toiled within it. Highly recommend!
