Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare
5.0
I've said it once, and I'll say it again- I am completely biased when it comes to Cassandra Clare. When you follow an author and series for this long, it's just impossible to not be! So here's my completely biased review on my reread of Chain of Gold in anticipation for Chain of Thorns!
I think the standout in this book is the characters. The cast is wide, and they're an absolute joy to read. They all have complex dynamics among each other, complete with long histories and strong emotions (whether it be love or hate). We get content from characters that we haven't seen in years, which also made this new book feel like visiting an old friend. They're an extremely easy bunch to root for. They're also SO GAY. This book is so seamlessly inclusive, and I love that about Clare's writing.
The plot follows a very similar formula to other Shadowhunter books- demons are doing something weird, a ragtag group of teenagers decide it's their responsibility to save the day, they recruit Downworlders to help, they get themselves into some sticky situations and ultimately (partially) do more for their community than their parents ever could! I still had fun with this book despite the formula. It's reliable, and it works.
I'm dying to know how this trilogy ends, but I would also prefer for it to never end!
