This book is about 12-year-old Rill who grows up poor but in a happy home on a houseboat in the Mississippi River delta.  She and her siblings are kidnapped and sold (adopted) to new parents.

The story is based on a real scandal in the US where a woman kidnapped and sold children during 30 years.  Many authorities and organizations must have helped her and facilitated her work.  More turned their backs on the children.

Parallel with Rill's story, we read about Avery who discovers the story and connects it with her demented grandmother.

The story is difficult to read, and I (of course!) feel for the children. So many thoughts are racing through my mind:

Can we ever know that an adoption has gone right?

Why are there people who might consider selling children?

What driving force do they have?

Read it!  It is really worth reading.
