Spectres of the Fall by S.C. Selvyn, S.C. Selvyn

4.0

Caveat: The author is a friend of mine, though that does not impact my review.

To start with, there are quite a few active characters in this book (and it's a long book) all of whom at some point provide first person narration. My opinion is that there are too many and it made it tough to track all of them and really even connect with them. My personal preference would have been to limit that to 3.

The book is also juvenile fantasy, I went in expecting YA but it's definitely skewing a bit younger than that. The is, in no way a criticism, it's simply expectation setting.

With all of that out of the way, I really did enjoy the book. There is a lot of depth in everything ranging from the world's history, it's magic, the characters' backstory and even their parents. There's a lot there, hence the length of the book.

Honestly, I appreciated the complexity especially around the Ildar resources and the roles they play in the story. While daunting for a younger, let's say 10 - 12, reader, based on the size of the book i do think most kids that age who are into the earlier Harry Potter, Diane Duane, etc. books will really enjoy it.
