Heralding by Faith Rivens
5.0
I received an ARC copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Heralding was such a pleasure to read! It is filled with insight, jam-packed with action, and brimming with humor. The main character, Eléonore, rarely seems to have a dull moment in her life. Besides being a (basically) single mom, Eléonore is a kickass female lead. She’s willing to stick up for herself, her family and her friends, all the while trying to keep her demon-hunting life separate from her personal one - without ever missing a beat with her snappy comebacks and sense of humor. Many scenes had me laughing out loud and wanting to reread in order to enjoy them again, but still looking forward to what might come next.
Faith writes beautiful prose and has a definite knack for adding humor into situations. I found myself highlighting lines I liked left and right. I also really enjoyed the French & Gaelic influences throughout the book. As an American reader, multi-lingual literature is sometimes hard to come by, especially if you are looking for something more than Spanish (which I love Spanish, but I usually have to really search to find other languages). However, the use of additional languages is not at the cost of reader comprehension - most words can be figured out with context clues. There is some profanity throughout the novel, but when present, it was well-deserved and appropriately placed.
While it is the second book in the Iníonaofa Chronicles, Heralding can easily be read as a stand-alone. There is enough summary to orientate new readers to events in the previous book, but not so much as to give everything away. I did notice a few typos and grammatical mishaps, but nothing to overly distract the reader. Overall this novel is a professional product and very well-edited.
One of my favorite parts about Heralding was the characters. I really enjoyed how all the characters interacted - each character was its own personality and the flow of dialogue seemed natural and effortless. Each of the characters is strongly developed and distinct in their own mannerisms and traits. Throughout the entire novel, I was cheering for Raphael and Eléonore to get back together, but I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes with all the other cast of characters.
I look forward to the reading more about the world Faith has masterfully created!
