Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
4.0
Homegoing is about two sisters; Effia and Esi from the Gold Coast in early 19th century Ghana during the transatlantic slave trade. They were separated at birth and know nothing of the other's existence. This book is full of epic lifestories of the two sisters and they and future generations fulfill different destinies. Spanning over several generations from the time of Effia and Esi up until the black power movement of the 60s and 70s to the Jim Crow era and into the present day, Homegoing was a breathtaking and emotionally unsettling journey. Don't get me wrong, this book is as absorbing as it is anxiety-inducing and I love the linear, life-story narrative that you would normally read in a historical fiction novel. It feels very intimate in the way it allows the reader to follow characters on a lifelong journey. Gyasi artfully creates a narrative that is dynamic, evolving yet cyclical and encapsulates the heart of ancestral Africa.
