Review: Know my Name by Chanel Miller ⁣
TW: Rape, sexual assault, trauma. ⁣

This book is a fucking triumph. Chanel has been in my ears all this month. She’s been reading to me every morning when I get up and get ready for work. Frequently, her voice has been the last thing I’ve heard before going to sleep. Her story has been in my head constantly. I’ve been thinking about it and reflecting on how her story has made me turn inward and think about my own sexual assault. ⁣

Chanel’s memoir is so beautifully and eloquently written. She spares northing in this raw narrative where she explores every emotion that she had during those years after her assault. She also poignantly comments on how the system is broken and doesn’t support victims of rape and sexual assault. Her commentary is sharp, honest, and powerful. This book is an absolute victory for every single person who has experiences sexual assault in any way, shape or form, because she does not turn away from how many times she was asked to relive her trauma and continuously was denied the human decency of being believed and supported by a system that strives for justice. ⁣

Everyone needs to read this. Read it because you have trauma and want to heal, read it because you have never experienced sexual assault and want to seek to understand what this nightmare is like, read it just because it is powerful and important. There isn’t anymore that I can say about it. I can’t do what she wrote justice and I doubt I ever could, but I implore you to read it. ⁣

Chanel inspired me with her words to share my experience with sexual assault. If you swipe right through this post you can read my story. Putting my story out on this platform is extremely nerve-wracking, but I think that writing and sharing is healing for me.
