Brutal read - so much misery for such a short book not to mention violence.

And some problematic attitudes towards being in love:

‘I had long felt that a person passionately in love was in the grip of something whose imperatives required one to accept, without complaint, that one might be murdered by a grief-stricken or jealous lover. The requirement to consent to such possibilities seemed to me to be intrinsic to love’s nature and, therefore, inseparable from its joys.’
