The Antique Hunter's Guide to Murder by C.L. Miller

4.0

As a lover of murder mysteries and antiques, the title intrigued me more than the plot when I first came across this book. However, I quickly became obsessed with the storyline, too.

I thought that the plot was well thought out and quite clever in its delivery - how everything seemed to revolve around one event in Freya's life, and how so many of her questions became answered after the death of her... adoptive grandfather?? Regardless, I found it quite a fun, and somewhat lighthearted murder mystery, and I know this would be one of those books that me and my grandmother could have enjoyed together had she still been with us.

I also loved how it was very reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel, how all the characters are sent to this isolated manor house in the middle of nowhere, and that they're all strangers. Freya reminded me a lot of Poirot in that regard, and how the ending was very Christie coded. I feel like it took all of the best of Christie's work without including all of the stereotypes.

The one thing that I will say about this novel, is that while I wasn't entirely confident on who the killer was towards the end, I was a little disappointed with the ending, and how while things got resolved, it wasn't as clean cut or give me the same book closing satisfaction as some other murder mysteries I've read. And I do very much hope that in the next book of the series, we get a satisfying conclusion to this storyline. I hope that each book in this particular series is a continuation rather than a standalone, otherwise I might have to bump this book down to a different rating.

Only time will tell, but this was a perfectly enjoyable book and I can't wait to hang out with Freya and Carole again!
