The Darkness by Ragnar Jónasson
4.0
I discovered this author and title by watching a YouTube video by Audrey at Chapter and Converse. Two things appealed to me about this recommendation; I love detective procedural mysteries featuring women, and I also like books written by authors from unique countries. Well, unique to me.I listened to the audiobook version os this title and I liked the narrator.
Set in Iceland, this book feels dark and intricate. I liked the main character, even though she isn't in a particularly good frame of mind. She's about to enter forced retirement and decides to work out a bit of time, rather than stop immediately. Her Superior is awful to her, but says she can look into some cold cases, and she immediately becomes drawn into one that may be more complex than it seemed.
This novel wasn't terribly fast paced for me, but it progressed nicely along the way. The best part of this book, in my opinion, is the ending. It was quite different than I am used to, and I don't want to spoil anything about this at all. Suffice it to say, I can see why some people would absolutely hate the ending. And yet, the opposite was true for me. What would have probably been a 3 or 3.5 star read for me ended up being a solid 4. And I want to read the next one in the series.
Very enjoyable. I recommend it to those who don't expect an ending tied up in a neat bow.
