The Favorites by Layne Fargo

5.0

finally, an ice skating (*dancing) book that gives me what i wanted after rewatching spinning out for the hundredth time: strong female characters with so much ambition, messy relationship dynamics, and a push-and-pull love story.

i admit i was so wrong about this one initially. i was so mad 37% in that i strongly considered dnfing and then my rating fluctuated between 1 and 5 stars depending on what part of the book i was on, but, as the story developed, i got to fully understand the characters and their motivations in their whole toxic, messy, and loveable glory. i loved this book, and even when i hated some of the decisions the characters made, the fact that i cared so strongly just goes to show how much layne fargo has improved as a writer (they never learn, for instance, was just fine throughout imo). also, i strongly recommend the audiobook, which is fantastic.
