Edit: I have read this book 3 times within a year, and every single time, I have fallen more in love with this series and the characters. Truly one of my favorite reads of all time.
Original review: This book fills me in a way I haven’t been filled in a very long time. I adored the characters, I loved the plot twist, and the storyline in general. Bree is my daughter and I would go to war for her 😩
This book takes care to address:
- the loss and grief of losing a family member and how one may navigate through that hurt.
- the yearning of wanting to learn all you can about a part of your heritage you didn’t know existed until recently so you have just one more thing to remind you of those gone before you.
- how being a black girl is an old secret magical society would still have to deal with racism and elitism and how she won’t back down from their BS or let their traditional nonsense stop her from achieving her goals.
I definitely recommend this to anyone who’s wanting something different done in urban fantasy YA. I’m definitely excited for book 2! If only November would hurry up already!!
