Charlie Hall has never met a job she can't handle, which given her specialty is deceiving and thieving, is probably a good thing. But Charlie is trying to turn over a new leaf, until she is unexpectedly thrust into the middle of a confusing story where she can't trust anyone and in order to stay alive, she has to tease out the truth herself. Will Charlie be able to save herself before it's too late?

Book of Night is the kind of book where the premise is intriguing and it's difficult to contain the excitement to read it and then it's a total let down, that's this book. The magic system was confusing and hard to follow. The different tiers or areas of magic, pick your poison, were tough to keep straight, which probably did not help my confusion. There were so many names and histories thrown around that was almost as if the author expected the reader to already understand.

Magic system aside this novel has a lot of gore. As someone who is squeamish around blood, I would have appreciated a heads up myself. So if you have difficulties with blood and/or gore, do not read this book.

I did enjoy Charlie Hall as the star of the novel. Charlie gave me a 90s grunge/emo vibe. She was sharp tongued, able to lob compliments and insults in the same breath. While she may have been rough around the edges, it was clear that she truly cared for the few people she dared to let be close to her.

The ending I can't decide if it pissed me off or was just a lackluster finally, this book is over. This is book one of a series, but I'm not sure if I'll pick up the second one.
