Season of Storms by Andrzej Sapkowski

Sadly the last of my Witcher books was probably the weakest in the series. The only thing that saved it is that it’s the Witcher... because if it was anything other than the Witcher I suspect the story would have been quite boring.

This book is basically a long random prequel journey where things go wrong for Geralt at every possible turn. It did start off well and had some memorable moments scattered here and there, but it didn’t have the charm or emotion that the short stories created and kinda just felt like I was passing between side quests without the overarching plot that normally ties a story together. Eg. The mission to find Ciri in the main series. While it is always cool to follow Geralts journeys because he’ll always be a badass, overall this book didn’t really add anything useful to the series and could easily be skipped.

I also should add my slight disappointment in Coral who I feel never really lived up to the hype that was built around her character in the early chapters. I mean if the gal is on the front cover of the book you’d think she’d have a large part but most of her moments were fleeting. There wasn’t much character building or development and to be honest out of all the great female characters in this series and in the games, she was probably the least memorable. Also I understand she isn’t supposed to be a major love interest because to Geralt everyone is in Yennefers shadow, plus she’s basically just a rebound girl and everyone knows it and admits it. But in the last book (the finale of the main series) we had a whole random chunk where Geralt is hooking up with Fringilla and even though it was dumb I did enjoy their chemistry. After all that though I’m not sure why the writer decided to create yet another, but less interesting, character for Geralt to get entwined with during this prequel.

I went into this book excited for a fun journey where we’d meet lots of interesting new characters but in the end I felt disappointed in mostly everything. I actually think it was a wasted opportunity to introduce us to something worthwhile and meaningful that would make us want to re-read the series again. I wish now that we could have had a quest alongside enjoyable characters like Triss or Shani who imo didn’t get enough time in this series. Or just give us more of Dandelion, I don’t think anyone would complain about that.
