Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore

5.0

4 and a half stars!

Hello, hello! After many months of lurking around on Goodreads, I have finally decided to make an account! I know my review will just be added to the pile of the unimportant ones nobody reads, but I really just wanna join the club!

Blanca and Roja is the story of two seemingly unbreakable sisters who are pitted against each other by a generations-old spell that allows los cisnes, swans, to turn one sister into a swan and leave the other as a girl. Or, as Yearling so eloquently put it,a story about two sisters, and a prince who got turned into a bear, and all the ways magic can save you but also fuck you up.

The main characters consist of Blanca, the golden-haired and honey-skinned older sister, Roja, the younger sister with darker skin and blood soaked hair, Yearling, the rich boy who recently went missing and is, supposedly, the key to Blanca's survival, and Page, the non-binary boy who went missing with Yearling. As Blanca and Roja try to save each other and themselves from becoming feathers and wings, all the while entangling two boys in the magic and danger of the spell, they weave a stunning story of sisters, love, and magic.

This is probably one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read. Something about McLemore's writing is just so enchanting and smells like vanilla and cream and possibilities. I wanted to throw myself into this book and become entangled with Blanca and Roja's story just as much as the characters themselves were. The things each of them do just to save each other is beyond moving. Sure, they made some decisions and said some things that made me wanna rip out my hair, but that's literally one of this book's strengths. I'm glad they did that, or else the characters wouldn't have discovered themselves the way they did. One thing I want to point out, though, is that while Anna-Marie's writing is some of the prettiest I've ever read, there were times where the lushness of it became too vague, and I had to wonder what was going on. That's literally the only gripe I have. I don't have anything else to add, either, other than I believe you should read this book if you're looking for a truly captivating story with beautifully written prose and characters.
