I find myself becoming more and more of a short-story and novella fan, when they're done well. Smolder is a great example of this.

With his life falling to pieces around him, Eric finds himself walking through the woods behind his house, with no idea of the evil that lurks amongst the trees. There's no reason, no explanation, and no happy ending. That's why it works.

I don't want some asshole riding in with a bible to beat the big bad. I want unexplainable and illogical evil because that's what allows your brain to take you to the worst possible places you can go.
