Here After by Amy Lin

5.0

I don’t think this book will be for everyone, but Lin’s story and her specific anxieties around death and loneliness mirror a lot of my own, so this one hit me HARD. It’s a quick read - it only took me a few hours to get through - and I would say I spent around 60% of that time ugly crying. It was very cathartic and I’m grateful that she shared her experience and let us get to know both her and Kurtis. I think one of the most healing things in grief is to be able to share the small things you love about the person you lost.

The structure of this memoir really worked for me as well. I enjoyed the way Lin wove in her memories of Kurtis and their life together into the narrative of his passing and her time spent in grief afterwards. The blending of timelines where things feel jumbled and one small thing can set off a series of memories about your person is very relatable if you’ve experienced traumatic grief. I would recommend this for people who are experiencing grief - if you have the emotional bandwidth to cry alongside the author.
