The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab

adventurous mysterious sad tense medium-paced

3.25

The Shades of Magic trilogy was a memorable one for me. Not because I five-starred each book (I didn't) but of the range of ratings I gave the books (four, three, and five, in that order). I felt like V.E. Schwab stuck the landing of that series, which could be due to the length of it vs. the other books that gave the characters enough time to breathe.

The Fragile Threads of Power was a good read to me. That's why it's a three star review for me. Great means four stars and excellent means five.

I found it challenging to get back into the Londons and the world V.E. Schwab had crafted. A re-read would have helped, and perhaps some recaps I could have watched or otherwise also would have helped. I bet if I took the time to do that before reading this, or in the middle of it, I might have rated it a little higher (also, come on Goodreads, give me half stars for goodness sakes!).

The new characters were OK. To me, Schwab shines at her character work. Since the Shades of Magic books, I've read some beautiful fantasy books that have also had strong character development (Sun Eater, Farseer Trilogy, and The First Law and other books in the world). Those other books, maybe due to recency bias, have really opened my eyes to character work. I felt like this book didn't really flesh out the new characters in a memorable way.
