The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

4.0

Per the author's website, the following are the content warnings: death of a parent, workplace sexual harassment, power differential, explicit and graphic sexual content, cursing and vulgar language. Additional: pancreatic cancer

Olive Smith is a Ph. D. student studying pancreatic cancer. In a spontaneous decision to convince her best friend that she was actually dating someone, she kissed a stranger in the hallway. Unbeknownst to her, it is none other than the young, hot, and cruel professor Dr. Adam Carlsen. As both realize they "need" a relationship, they agree to fake date. What will come of their fake dating? Will it still fake or will it become real?

This novel is a quick, and relatively lighthearted, read. Set at Stanford with a science undertone, the scientific jargon isn't overwhelming yet just enough to create the aura of illustrious graduate school. I appreciate that Olive also dabbles in exploring and understanding her asexuality (or perhaps gray or demi), further empathizing that asexual spectrum people can have and are capable of having relationships (romantic, sexual, or otherwise).

On a personal note, having just lost a friend to pancreatic cancer, this book hurt.
