Reign & Ruin by J.D. Evans
5.0
FINALLY!! This is the kind of fantasy romance I love!!!
✔ great world building - contained but feels "real" and established
✔ wonderful characters with depth & purpose
✔ an intriguing plot that keeps you engaged
✔ and a romance that unfolds alongside and is handled beautifully - with just the right amount of tension & yearning, fun & quick-witted banter, and no (!!!) annoying miscommunication (which always drives me crazy)
I couldn't finish Reign & Ruin fast enough! It actually reminded me of how I felt when I first read & devoured The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen (one of my absolute faves), so I'm very excited to have finally found something like that again, that just grabbed my attention and didn't let go.
And in a similar vein, the books in this series follow different pairings. However, while it's 2 books per couple in TBK, in Mages of the Wheel the main characters change with every book. Not sure yet how I feel about that, since I'm dying to get more from Naime & Makram - I hope they will keep popping up at least.
But the writing was beautiful and the storytelling very much my cup of tea, so I'm confident I will enjoy whatever comes next. I can't wait to pick up the rest of the books, learn more about this world, and see what's in store for other characters.
