I know this book is set in the 80s, but the transphobia in it is still gross to me. The fact that Bernardo's murder was literally a trans panic hate crime is never addressed despite Dante being the victim of a super similar crime. Ultimately, this book is a fine queer read for late middle or early high school, but it's not radical or terribly interesting.
Graphic: Homophobia and Violence
Moderate: Alcoholism, Hate crime, and Transphobia
