A Midnight of Dreams by Lyra Forger is the 2nd book in The Originals of Grimm Academy series.
The first book ended with a cliffhanger and we jump right back in from there. And I said in my previous review that I hoped the second book would relieve me from the heartwrenching feeling of the cliffhanger ending... but it didn't.
I don't want to spoil anything, which is kind of difficult seeing the blurb of the book is quite... empty.
The book does continue in the fantasy academy setting with a curvy FMC, Anna, and a grumpy fae prince, Orpheus.
World-building is difficult to describe, again, without spoiling anything. Let me just say that for the time period it is taking place in, it did disappoint a bit. There is nice world-building for the environments, school and housing, but other parts did fall short.
Now for the character building, I wish I could say I liked Anna, but I really didn't. She keeps making the same mistakes and then she recognizes that she 'fd' up, just to do it all again two paragraphs later. It seems like she is in this neverending self destructive phase, and at the same time she takes other people with her. Her friends aren't all that forthcoming. She drags them into some pretty devastating things, and they seems like okay with it at first, to then sort of shut her out shortly after. But like, noone tells her the obvious, that she is continuously making the same mistakes.
Apart from making the same mistakes over and over again, Anna does not really seem to get further ahead of were she was. It feels like she quite literally starts all over again.
The book is said to be spicy, and it might be because I am accustomed to some high spice books, but I found this second part to be less spicy, if at all, than the first book and it is extremely slow burn.
There are certain time jumps in the book which feel too abrupt and off pace. Apart from that, certain repetitive wording choices were troublesome for me.
Overall, I did sort of like the book, I doubted several times if I should continue reading but the story did keep me going. And where a Dusk of Stars ended in a cliffhanger, a Midnight of Dreams does so too.
Thanks to the author Lyra Forger for giving me the opportunity to read this as an ARC reader. My opinions are my own and my review is voluntarily.
