It's really hard to switch from three really good books in a row to a deeply mediocre book, and I didn't end up finishing this one. I only got it in the first place because it was YA fantasy set on Vancouver Island. I liked that the protagonist was First Nations, and didn't get silly about it. I liked that her adopted mother was also First Nations, but a different nation, and yes that did matter. Most of the details about life on the Island were right (except there are no badgers), so yay? But it was still yet another novel about a sixteen year old girl angsting about high school. As soon as the dreaded love triangle reared its ugly head, I bailed. I assume there was magic or something in there somewhere, but I didn't last that long.
