This is the sequel to Three Dark Crowns. It is hard to review without spoilers. There was no lag in the story, there was always action or a reveal. I know that was the main complaint of the first book but this is not a novel of characters just talking about things. One star was dropped only for the repeated action to one character that was witnessed before as being immune to that action.
