Whoa.

This was brutal. Throughout this short translated novel I struggled to understand the main character. Is he good? Is he bad? Does he grow? Will he learn a lesson and promote change?

No spoilers but the ending shocked me. The version I read had a sneak peak of her next book so I thought I had 15 more pages to go. Nope.

People talk of this as an analogy to our cognitive dissonance when it comes to our food supply, and that applies. But reading it now, I'm analyzing it in the context of our labour supply. Migrants in America aren't seen as humans, they're seen as a commodity, and thus aren't treated with humanity. People are reduced to what they provide, not who they are, and so can be eradicated based on certain qualities designated by a ruling class.

This is one of those books where if someone says "reading isn't political" I'm like "you aren't paying attention".
