How Nivi Got Her Names by Laura Deal

4.0

I think this book might be the most I have ever read on Inuit custom adoption or Inuit naming customs. I am not sure I ever realised there was this much information TO read, and now I want to learn more. But this was a great intro to both.

It can be quite wordy at times, but the story is still very sweet. Seeing Nivi feel so eager to learn and feel so much pride in her names warmed my heart. I think the illustrations were extremely cute, but that's to be expected from a talented artist like Charlene Chua.

I think that this could be interesting for children looking to learn about their own culture if they are Inuit and don't have a lot of knowledge yet regarding custom adoption or naming customs, and I think it could be interesting for curious minded children. I am not sure that all children would enjoy this book since it is so wordy and informational, but I know that I enjoyed it now and I probably would have enjoyed it myself as a child. I definitely enjoyed it as an adult, and I think other adults looking for an intro to Inuit custom adoption and Inuit naming customs will find this to be a lovely little primer on the subjects.
