There is so much that this book does right, I don’t think I can list them all here without this review being a mile long.
First, the complexity of the story has left me speechless. I have absolute respect for Schrefer right now because there was clearly so much effort and passion but into this book. Science Fiction isn’t really my kind of genre, but The Darkness Outside Us just had an interesting plot…and stunning cover! (Seriously, it’s one of my favorites!)
Ambrose and Kodiak - I mean, what NAMES! - were well developed, which is impressive given what continues to happen as the story progresses. There is, however, a bit of a disconnect for me since there are time skips and I’m used to linear storylines. Again, I’m used to the linear storytelling so I’m not knocking off a star for that. Four stars just feels right to me.
Schrefer also captures the imagery of space and the Endeavor really nicely! I love it when books let me cozy up with my own mind-movie as I read, turning all the words into moving scenes.
I’m not a fan of space. It scares me…which is another thing Schrefer conveys while making it strangely beautiful and peaceful. Add in the already/present hesitation with AIs thanks to movies like I, Robot and The Darkness Outside Us has this cool blend of feelings it stirs up in me. Overall, it must’ve been a captivating read because I finished it in two days lol
