After thoroughly enjoying two other books by Emily Henry, I have found myself wanting to tackle ALL of them while trying to savor them at the same time. This one was absolutely fantastic. I love how diabolic it is that these two were exes to their old significant others. The whole thought into that being the plot line just blows my mind and lends to it being a Funny Story! I love how different these two were but they just FIT. I loved how they found themselves again together this time. Daphne was more of our type A schedule person and having a plan that she wants to follow. While Miles is a bit of a disaster but is loved by ALL. He has a kind of sort of plan that he follows but he seems to be one that enjoys the little things a lot. Daphne is on the other side of figuring out how to get the F out of dodge. While Miles is trying to do everything he can to show her how amazing their little town is- quirky farm people and closed door poker nights included. I loved the bit about fake dating and how that seemed to spark something between these two. The chemistry building between these two was FANTASTIC. I loved how when they finally made their move- it felt SOOO right but then Miles had to clear the air and say he didn't want to ruin what they had. He didn't know if he had any gas left to give. So they went back to friends but not really. They were just circling and waiting for the right time. The time where they couldn't fight it anymore. And once it happens OMG it was MAGICAL. But then Miles disappears. And THAT KILLED ME! Daphne has been left too many times. Even though she tries not to believe in people, she secretly does. She when he brushes her off she doesn't know what to think. But MILES. He is just the absolute sweetest man. Terrible communicator but that whole sequence of events that he tried to make happen for her was the perfect ending to this book. These two were truly broken when they found each other under weird circumstances. But then they blossomed together as different and BETTER people.
Daphne has her whole life planned out. She will get married and live in her dream house and have babies and work in the children's section of the library. All is going to plan until her fiance breaks up with her for his best friend. The best friend who he always assured meant nothing more than friends. So now Daphne has found herself moving in with Miles- her now ex fiances NEW girlfriend's ex boyfriend. That's a mouthful. And OMG is he a slob. And he blasts Celine Dion and watches SAD movies. Clearly he is just as upset about this whole thing as she is. But then they get into a rhythm. And he decides to start showing her around the town- the secrets of the town. What makes it such a cool place to live. So they have these dates that aren't dates. Daphne starts to realize how much she enjoys looking at the calendar and seeing the Sunday block of a day adventure. She also starts to realize how much she enjoys Miles along with the adventure. They have found themselves in a fake dating situation which only comes up around their exes. But when they run into her ex- she kisses him in public for the first time. And it is magical. Now Miles is all she can think about. How he lights up a room when he walks in. How he seems to know EVERYONE in town and how much they all love him and all he brings to the table. How much he does to make her smile. How much she wants to kiss him again. And though he is feeling it too- they decide friends are better. This relationship means a lot to them. But then Miles's sister comes to visit. And then Daphne's dad comes to visit. And it seems that alllll of the walls are down between her and Miles now. She finds herself telling him things she has told no one before. She wants more from him. She wants everything. Forget her plan. He is the new one. And so they finally go for it- and it is everything she thought it would be. But then he ghosts her. She finds out that her ex and Miles's ex broke up. Could they be getting back together? Why isn't he returning her calls? Did what they have mean so little to him? She spirals. All of the old fears come to play. And though she is beyond disappointed she realizes she is right where she is supposed to be. She just hopes whatever his explanation is will make sense. Because she can't picture life in this place without him now.
UGH- how does Emily do it?? I felt SOOOO many things while reading this. I was angry for Daphne and Miles. How dare their exes do that to them? I was intrigued and laughed out loud at this bizarre situation. I found myself LOVING the build up. The gentle touches. The quite moments. THAT KISS. And then I was sad again because UGH FRIENDS ONLY?! But then I was excited again because of course more is going to happen. I was broken hearted at Daphne's history with her dad and Miles history with his family. But then ridiculously proud of her saying her heart to him and setting those safe boundaries. And then beyond disappointed and SHOCKED when Miles ghosted Daphne. WHAT?! But then my heart was beyond mended and I found myself with the absolutely biggest smile on my face when he explained what he was trying to do. I loved the vulnerability between these two!! I can't recommend this one or any of her books that I have read so far. They are a little slower than normal- so be ready for a slow burn- but the journey is worth it.
One quote that stuck out to me in this one:
"Trust people's actions, not their word. Don't love anyone who isn't ready to love you back. Let go of the people who don't hold onto you."
