I finally got to reading this long-time TBR of mine. Personally, I thought it was everything reviewers had chalked it up to be and more.
The writing style and tone had me hooked from the first chapter (even first page?!), similar to my experience with the Love of My Afterlife by Kristy Greenwood. Right from the establishing of Florence’s character I knew it was going to be a heartfelt narrative diving into bleak subject matter in a witty, humorous manner.
The chemistry between the two leads was palpable. I adored the way Ben’s calm, collected demeanor immediately clashed with Florence’s behavior. All the supporting characters (including the entire Day family) were solid, too. Even though the plot was semi-predictable, there were points (and decisions made) that kept me eagerly turning the page. The “paranormal” magical realism was a nice touch, but by no means the story’s big selling point.
As someone who can handle a dose of spice/smut without actively seeking it out, I was also pleasantly surprised by the way the spice was relatively contained without being 100% closed-door, either. That balance is hard to strike in romance novels!
Overall, I recommend giving this book a try if you’re feeling a lighthearted romance with a slightly macabre edge. It may not everyone’s taste, but it was right up my alley!
