Content warnings: death, dysfunctional family relationships

Enter Claudia Lin, a young professional Chinese-American born to an immigrant mother, who is trying to not let the model minority dictate her life. She no longer works for the company that her brother helped to get her a job at but instead at a Veracity, a company that acts as an online dating detective agency. Claudia loves the job, regardless of whether it's conventional or not, and sees herself in line with her favorite mystery detective Inspector Yuan. When a client goes missing, Claudia can't help but to try her hand at sleuthing. Will Claudia solve the mystery before it's too late?

Aside from a confusing start to the story, as to whether it was set in the present day (circa 2022) or in the future, this book was fun and enjoyable. Claudia was a wonderful character who is self-aware of her good and bad parts, utilizing either when necessary. As someone who is not a first generation American, I welcomed the perspective that Claudia has in navigating a society that simultaneously ostracizes and welcomes her.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of this novel was the social commentary on the use of our data and how that can affect our lives in a myriad of ways. While the specific data was towards the online dating industry, the same questions can be asked of any industry that deals with online data. What do people consent to (or shouldn't)? How can that data be used ethically? What is the ethical line? There is definitely more to explore on this subject and I hope that this isn't just a standalone book!
