Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

5.0

Well, I can finally check this one off my list.

This book was terrific, terrible, aggravating and wonderful. Scarlett never won my affection and I stopped liking Rhett halfway through the book. I think the only thing that got me through it was Melanie, which I suppose is the whole purpose. You need some sort of rock of goodness to keep you halfway interested in such apprehensible characters, which is basically what she did for all the characters in the book.

The racism was sickening, but I still think this is an important novel. It's a window into a horrible world I don't know much about (one which I think still exists in pockets of the South today) and don't want to know much more about either. It's a book we need to take with a grain of salt and recognize the time it was written and the time it takes place in.

I know this story will bother me and stay with me for a long time after I've finished it.
