A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

For me, it was not just the book concerning the issue of racial discrimination in the US but what it leads to in terms of the psychology of victims and bullies. The victim - Shirin, started to look for discrimination everywhere and that caused her to lose trust and faith in people. Simultaneously, no one helped her to develop the mechanism of coping with unequal treatment, so she just distanced herself from others. Moreover, no one seemed to be brave enough to stand by her side, and the omnipresent ignorance just made things worse. Not bullies, but people who allowed them to exist were the most guilty.
