Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado
5.0
4.5 rounded up
If the only horror in this book was manifested in the form of the loss of bodily autonomy, it would be terrifying enough. But Machado doesn't stop there, and these stories are full of cosmic dread and the terror of half-known truths and nightmares. So many nightmares. They are both waking ones and not, and these characters tumble through them, unaware of (or sometimes, too aware of) the danger lurking around the corner. These stories are all oddly beautiful despite their darkness, and there is one that even ends on a semi-hopeful note: my favorite story,"Especially Heinous," the Law & Order SVU style series of blurbs in which two detectives are mired in their own personal hells. I can't wait to read her memoir.
